# Designing your point of sale in StoreConnect

Every point of sale system gives you buttons, screens, and menus. But what happens when the layout you're handed doesn't match how your business actually works?

StoreConnect's point of sale was built around one idea. You shouldn't have to work around the interface. The interface should work around you.

That flexibility comes down to three building blocks that work together: action groups, layouts, and views. Let's break down what each one does and how combining them gives you total control over the point of sale experience you want.

## Action groups

Think of an action group as any collection of clickable actions. The sidebar on the left of the point of sale is an action group. The row of icons across the top is an action group. Even the home screen, with its grid of category tiles, is an action group of its own.

Each item inside a group, called an action item, can also be fully customized. You decide what happens when someone taps it: navigate to a layout, open another group, launch a modal, or trigger a built-in function like managing the cart. Action groups can even nest within other action groups.

Out of the box, point of sale gives you sensible defaults, like settings and lock. But nothing is locked in. If your business needs a completely different navigation structure, action groups let you build it from scratch.

## Layouts

Once someone taps into a group, they land on a layout. Layouts control how records are displayed, and point of sale gives you four types: a list, a grid, a record view, and a form.

Lists and grids show collections. Think customer lists or product catalogs. Records show the details of a single item, like an order summary or product information. Forms are simply editable versions, for creating or updating a customer record, for example.

Every layout connects to a Salesforce object, and you decide exactly which fields show up as columns or cards. You can set a primary action, a secondary action in the corner, and a record action that activates as soon as someone clicks the record.

## Views

Now, here's where things get really powerful. Every layout, and even individual fields within a layout, can have a view attached to it. A view means you step outside point of sale's standard rendering entirely and take over that space completely with your own HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Liquid.

Want a list to render as a responsive card instead of a plain row? That's a view. Want to build a completely custom stock take interface with barcode scanning and bulk uploads that writes directly back into Salesforce? That's also a view.

Views can be launched as modals, injected into a layout, or triggered straight from JavaScript using built-in point of sale functions. This is the tier where point of sale stops being a system you configure and becomes a system you can genuinely build on.

## The point of sale your business actually needs

The result isn't just the point of sale that's available to you. It's the point of sale your business actually needs. And once you understand how action groups, layouts, and views connect, you're not just using StoreConnect point of sale, you're creating it.
