# Custom Apex written when configuration would have done is technical debt you'll pay for years

The storeconnect-apex-integration skill teaches AI agents when a StoreConnect requirement genuinely needs Apex, which shape to build and the platform rules that keep that Apex safe in your org.

## Unnecessary custom code crowds out the work that matters

Custom development time is scarce. MuleSoft's 2026 Connectivity Benchmark found IT teams spend an average of 36% of their time designing, building and testing custom integrations, and 26% of IT projects weren't delivered on time[^1]. Every Apex class that didn't need to exist takes a share of that capacity, now and at every release.

The skill gives the agent an escalation ladder and tells it to stop at the first row that fits[^2]. A fixed redirect is a routing record with no code. Request-time logic on a route the platform already serves is a Liquid controller. Collecting shopper input is a form. Apex is reserved for work that genuinely has to happen inside Salesforce.

## Code that assumes the wrong architecture fails in ways that are hard to trace

The most common mistake is architectural. A storefront template can't call an Apex method, and Apex runs after a record reaches Salesforce, so its effects aren't visible to the shopper in the same response[^2]. An AI assistant that doesn't know this will design something that can't work, and a developer will spend hours finding out why.

Stack Overflow's 2025 survey found 66% of developers are frustrated by AI solutions that are "almost right, but not quite"[^3]. Architecture is where almost-right is most expensive, because the whole design has to change.

## Credentials in the wrong place turn a shortcut into a breach

When code needs to reach Salesforce from the storefront, the tempting shortcut is to put a credential in a theme file or store variable. The skill treats that as prohibited[^2]. IBM's 2025 research puts the global average cost of a data breach at $4.44 million, and $10.22 million in the US[^4]. The skill also covers Apex deployment conventions and safely generating storefront content ahead of render, so custom code stays within the platform's safety rules.

## Write less code, and make the code you write count

The cheapest Apex to maintain is the Apex you never had to write.

Load it before writing, reviewing or deploying any Apex, trigger, Flow-invoked class or approved callout for a store, and when choosing between Apex, a Liquid controller and a form.

[Watch the full demo](https://storeconnect.com/ai#SC-ContentBlock-ai-full-demo). CEO Mikel Lindsaar shows how an agent builds on a live store with plain-language prompts, and how every change is reviewed.
